Building Control devolves in Wales

A constitutional move has been made that brings the devolution of building regulations to Wales a step closer.

An Order in Council has been approved by the Queen which transfers powers to make Building Regulations for buildings in Wales to Welsh Ministers with effect from 31 December 2011. The order laid before Parliament in July was approved by committees of both Houses of Parliament.  Devolving Building Regulations to Wales opens the way for the Welsh Assembly Government to change the way new buildings are built, making them more energy efficient and sustainable.

Environment Minister Jane Davidson said: “We will consult fully on any proposed changes to building regulations, including an assessment of the costs and benefits and the impact on other policy commitments.”
